@Ben: Yeah, so far the tourist visa thing works well for me, but I don't think I'd like to still be on it 5 years down the road. Maybe the marriage thing will work out for me, too. ;-)

@Fabi: You're so welcome, baby! It's how I feel. (And did you catch the above part?? Haha. :D)

I don't know what the logic behind non-voting is but I've been exploring my options for residency / citizenship.

Residency's easy enough, you just have to have $60,000 in the bank and have $1000 a month shifted into a CR account and colones every month for 5 years, but you don't have to spend it so you can re-use it over and over. That doesn't appeal to me mostly because I'm saving up to buy or build a house here and $60,000 going to residency kind of delays that.

Marriage to a tico gets you non-voting citizenship as well which is something I'm loosely considering, it really depends on how long you have to be married (heh).

I'm still on tourist visas, they rock so much. I hate the entire concept of visas. When I was in Canada I had a 6 month visa and when that expired I had to leave the country for 180 days before I was eligible for a new one. The US wasn't much better, from memory you had to actually leave the continent as well, and I imagine Australia (where I'm from) is no better. The entire concept of visas just feels so out-dated and limiting these days when you can up and move on a whim, taking your job with you if you're one of the fortunate ones able to.

Is it citizenship, or permanent residency? And if it's citizenship, any idea what the logic is behind making it non-voting?

Unfortunately for me and my tourist visa, I'm not planning on popping out a little tico any time soon! :-D
